Our History
The Pilgrimage of the Church of the Word…
In the Middle Ages pilgrims coming back from a holy site would call out to those along the way,
“Ultreya”, meaning “Onward”.
In late October of 2003, after a group
of 20 - 25people had been faithfully meeting weekly at the home of Jim and
Paula Wilson, the first service of The Anglican Church of the Word, met on
the porch of Michael and Margaret Hesford. (middle picture). Thirty-four
“faithful” were at that first Service. And, “Ultreya”, the new church moved
“Onward”. On Sunday, November 2, 2003 we held our first Service at
Chesterbrook Academy, which would be our church home for over three years.
The new congregation became affiliated, as a Parish, with the Emmaus Network
of The Anglican Mission in America.
Father Bill Eaton, agreed to postpone his planned
retirement to Pennsylvania, and became the first Rector of the church. The
church was very blessed to have Fr. Bill and his wife, Ruthmary, as the
church’s clergy family. On that first Sunday, a Vestry of 6 parishioners
along with a Treasurer were elected. In addition, all the needed ministries
for the church were filled from Altar Guild to Website facilitator, and
everything in between.
Creativity and flexibility, under the guidance
of the Holy Spirit, have enabled our church to flourish. A newly Ordained
Deacon, Carlos Miranda became our first Deacon. The Church of the Word was
also blessed to have, for a time, Fr. Moore Chiwesche and his family. Fr.
Chiwesche was from Zimbabwe and shared ministry, for a time, with Fr. Bill.
Our church has been blessed again and again. Since Palm Sunday, April 1,
2007, we now share church facilities with Faith Christian Church, who even
adjusted their worship time to accommodate us.
After his Ordination
to the Priesthood, with our support and blessing, Fr. Carlos planted a new
Anglican Church in South Miami.
In 2008, Fr. Bill and Ruthmary were
able to retire and move back to Pennsylvania.
Fr. Cass Daly was
called to be the 2nd Rector of the Church of the Word. He and his wife,
Audrey (Audie), moved back to South Florida from Highlands, N.C. where Fr.
Cass had been an Anglican Rector.
In addition, the church has an
Ordained Deacon, the Rev. Dr. Flo Taber-Brown, and for a time were also blessed to have
Fr. Jonathan Smith, an ordained Anglican priest and the Dean of Knox
Theological Seminary along his family as members of our Parish family.
Today, the Anglican Church of the Word continues to experience God’s
blessing of faithful followers willing to jump in and help at a moment’s
notice. The community is invited to join us in worship on Sundays at 9 AM,
at 7676 Davie Road Extension, Hollywood, Florida 33024. We are an Anglican
church offering traditional and contemporary biblical worship in a joyful
environment. Our church and individual ministries are wide and varied. We
have an active Sunday School, Bible Studies, varied mid-week worship
opportunities; outreach ministries to a pregnancy center, food pantry,
varied local, national and world-wide charities: a Haitian orphanage, Kairos
prison ministry, liturgical dance team, a Chaplaincy at the VA and others.
May memories of our beginnings always
glorify and praise our Lord Jesus Christ, without whom we have no purpose,
but with Him all things come together. We praise Him, along with the Father
and Holy Spirit, for continuing to bless us as we grow and serve Him
Come see what we are doing… soon; “Ultreya” – “Onward”
